Windows Server 2016 is available in Standard, Datacenter, and Essentials editions. Windows Server 2016 Datacenter allows users to run an unlimited number of Hyper-V operating system environments and containers. The Standard Edition allows you to run only two. The Datacenter edition also includes features such as Storage Spaces Direct and Storage Replica, or Shielded virtual machines. These features are not part of the Standard Edition. Windows Server Essentials is intended for small structures not exceeding 25 users and 50 devices.
Once you have downloaded Windows Server 2016, you can start the installation. If you are on a physical machine, you can burn the ISO image to a DVD or create a Bootable USB key with Rufus for example. If you are on a virtual machine, it's even simpler, you just have to mount the ISO.
Installation options :
Both Standard and Datacenter Editions offer three installation options :
- Core Server: educes the space needed on the disk, the potential attack surface, and in particular the necessary system resources (as can be seen in the installation prerequisites). Nevertheless, you find exactly the same features as on other installation options.
- Server with User Experience : installs the standard user interface and all management tools. It is then possible to install server roles and features through Server Manager or other methods (including Powershell).
- Nano Server: is a remotely manageable operating system optimized for private clouds and datacenters. It is similar to Windows Server in Server Core mode, but with even less functionality, for example, there is not the possibility of local logon, and not only support 64-bit applications, tools, or agents . It takes a lot less disk space, allows a much faster setup, and requires far fewer updates and reboots than other options.
Minimum material requirements :
The following hardware prerequisites are applicable for all installation options (Server Core, GUI server, and Nano Server) and both Standard and Datacenter editions. However, you must of course take into account where the roles you will install on the server.
